Raul’s college was informed through a court notice as she had mentioned the college name in her police complaint.

Former city mayor Shubha Raul was in for a pleasant surprise when she finally got her gold chain back which was stolen 26 years back in a chain-snatching incident. The incident dates back to 1990 when Raul was studying at Podar Hospital in Worli. When Raul was waiting to take a bus, two people in a car stopped before her. One of them snatched the chain, after which the duo sped in the car. Raul had registered a case with the Worli police station. “The case was detected by the Tilak Nagar police in 1991. The chain was handed over to her by Vikhroli court now,” said a police officer.

In a bid to curb chain snatching incidents, the Mumbai police started booking chain snatchers under the IPC in 2011 for robbery rather than theft as the punishment for the former is harsher than that of the latter. Raul’s college was informed through a court notice as she had mentioned the college name in her police complaint. She was subsequently notified following which she collected the chain from the court.
