The Sahar police have arrested a 27-year-old youth for carrying a duplicate USA visa at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) . After being produced before a magistrate’s court, he has been remanded in police custody till June 9.
According to the Sahar police the accused, Safvan Yakub Barefwala, is a native of Gujarat. “Barefwala has been working as a salesman in an African country since 2013,” said Vishnu Pawar, sub inspector, who is investigating the case.
Immigration officials at the airport found the fake visa stamped on his passport and handed him over to the Sahar police on Sunday.
“He claims that he travelled to Malawi where a woman offered him the US visa . She took Rs85,000 from him. He returned to India and landed in Mumbai by an Ethiopian airline. He had plans to travel to the USA on the fake visa,” said a police official.
An FIR has been registered against Barefwala under sections 465 (forgery), 471 (using a forged document), 420 (cheating) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. The Malawian woman has been named in the case too.
“We are recording his statements and will try to find out whether he was duped into buying the visa. We are also trying to trace the woman who sold him the visa,” added the official.
