A 30-year-old man from Shedung who allegedly killed his wife by hitting her with an iron rod on June 27 was arrested by the Panvel police on Tuesday.

Ramchandra Katkari and Nilima, 27, tied the knot three years ago and they lived at Katkarvadi village in Panvel. Soon, their martial life ran into troubles, the police said.

“Katkari would suspect that Nilima had an extra-marital affair with someone from the neighborhood and that led to frequent quarrels between them. He would also abuse and assault her following altercations. Her parents knew this, but they did not take any step assuming everything would be alright after a few months,” said a police officer from Panvel police station.

On June 27, following a tiff, he slugged Nilima with an iron rod on her head. Rather than admitting her to a hospital, he took her to her mother’s place and then fled the spot,” the officer said.

Nilima succumbed to her injuries on July 4. After her family registered a complaint, the police arrested Katkari on Tuesday.

The man has been booked under section 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced before the judicial court on Tuesday afternoon and was remanded in police custody for five days.

The police are now investigating the case to find out if there were any other reasons behind the murder. “It is unclear if the accused was under the influence of alcohol since we arrested him a week after the incident. He did odd jobs to earn his livelihood. We have not found any criminal antecedent against him,” another police officer said.
