A 55-year-old woman was killed after a speeding tourist bus knocked her down while she was crossing the road in Andheri east on Monday afternoon. According to the Andheri police, the incident took place at around 2.30 pm at the Andheri-Kurla junction.

The deceased was identified as Meera Shah, a local resident of Andheri. “Shah, a housewife was crossing the road when the tourist bus hit her from the right. She suffered injuries on entire right side of her body,” said senior police inspector Pandit Thorat of Andheri police station.

She was rushed to Cooper hospital where she was declared dead. The body was sent for an autopsy and later handed over to her family. The 42-year-old bus driver has been arrested and the police said the driver tried to help the victim, however, the police denied disclosing his identity.

They have booked him under Sections 279 and 304 A of the Indian Penal Code for rash and negligent driving causing death. The police said the driver was not in an inebriated state. He was produced before a magistrate’s court on Tuesday and sent to judicial custody. The police are trying to find if there are any CCTV cameras in the vicinity that may have captured the incident.
