The Mumbai police on Thursday booked actor Shilpa Shetty Kundra, her businessman husband Raj Kundra and three others – all directors of an online shopping TV show Best Deal – for allegedly cheating a textile firm owner of Rs 24 lakh.

“The vendor is misusing his connections in various stations. This is a civil matter and an abuse of the law.We have tight contracts signed. On the contrary, the vendor owes us money for not fulfilling orders. We are following the laws of the land. It’s sad that at every step of the way my wife’s name is dragged in to create media hype. She was a non executive, who had nothing to do with the daily running of the business,” Kundra told HT.

According to the complaint, Goregaon resident Ravi Mohanlal Bhalotia,60, met the actor, her husband and the others – Durshit Indravan Shah, Uday Kothari and Vedant Bali – for an online shopping deal two years ago.

“They bought bedsheets worth Rs 1.5 crore from me in 2015. I handed over the items to them, for which they paid Rs1.44 crore in January 2016,” said Bhalotia. “When I approached them, they made several false promises and convinced me to give them another consignment of bedsheets worth Rs 18 lakh in July 2016. But they never paid me for it.”

Bhalotia approached Thane police commissioner Param Bir Singh 10 days ago and filed a complaint. After conducting a primary investigation, the police booked the five people on charges of cheating.

M Sawant, senior inspector, Kongaon police station, said, “We have not arrested anyone yet. We will send them a notice about it.”
