The Kanjurmarg police arrested a 50-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman on Tuesday after a minor girl alleged that the man had raped her in 2015 and the woman, her aunt, abetted the crime.

The girl talked about the incident before a probation officer at a shelter home, where she was kept after she was victimised in another sexual assault case. The girl’s mother had left her when she was a child. Her father married another woman but died later.

She lived with her step-mother and her aunt after her father’s death. The man, who was arrested, was their neighbour and in a relationship with the aunt. He visited their house frequently. In 2015, he had allegedly raped the minor there. The aunt knew about this but had silenced her. She was 14 years old then.

In the same year, two others, one of them a minor, from the neighbourhood had allegedly molested her. The Kanjurmarg police had arrested them and the girl had been sent to a shelter home.

A police official said, “She mostly kept quiet at the shelter home. Earlier this month (in June), we received a letter from the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), informing us that the girl has given them a statement on being raped by a man and her aunt abetting it.”

Based on the allegation, an FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
