Your bus commute in Mumbai is all set to get smoother. The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) on Tuesday introduced 75 new spacious buses, equipped with laptop and mobile charging points, better ventilation and more legroom.

These are part of the 303 new buses to be added to the 3,800-bus fleet of the loss-making transport body. BEST offers bus services to Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. The number of daily commuters on BEST buses has dropped to 28 lakh from 35 lakh. Each bus cost BEST Rs55 lakh, according to officials.

The new buses are 12-m long, a meter more than the existing buses. The buses are fitted with on board laptop and mobile charging points on their side walls. The buses have a centralised ventilation system. The BEST has increased the space between two seats to give more legroom.

The BEST has increased the width of front and back doors of the buses to 650m, from the existing 600m. They have reduced the height of the steps, so senior citizens, children and women can easily board it. Air suspension of the buses will make riding comfortable for passengers.

BEST has also improved illumination inside the buses by getting LED tubelights.

These buses will also give relief to drivers, as they have automatic transmission, which means no need for a clutch.

The driver’s cabin has been fitted with blowers, to give them relief from the heat of the engine.
