City hosts its first triathlon

All lanes led to the ‘Nirmal presents Hindustan Times Classhopr Triathlon’ on Sunday morning. More than 1,000 citizens from across the state participated in events that ranged from running the marathon to swimming. A fitness carnival at Nirmal Sports City, hosting events such as zumba, rhythmic yoga, Bollywood dancing and crossfit was an instant hit among participants.
The triathlon was the first such event in Mumbai and tested the fitness levels of citizens from all age groups - a fun way to spend your Sunday. Participants arrived at the Thane Club, from where the marathon began, in the wee hours to prove their mettle. The second event, swimming, was held at the Nitro Gym.
Pravin Thukrul, 29, a participant from Dahisar, left his home at 3 am. He had been practising for the event for more than ten days. “I am used to running. However cycling and swimming are new to me. I could complete all three races without giving up. It was difficult to cycle on the slope and I was almost out of breath, but I finished the race after half-an-hour.”
Sandeep Sutar, 19, a Borivli resident, was among the early birds who finished the race and joined the yoga sessions. “The race was a great experience, I enjoyed swimming the best among the three events as we hardly get time to swim regularly,owing to our busy lifestyle,” he said.
Aira Rane, 12, participated in the dualthon as she did not know how to swim. “To prepare for the race, I ran 6km daily. I was confident of finishing both races. There should be more fitness-centric events in the city.”
A sports arena was set up at one corner, where people could play mini golf, badminton or dance with a hula hoop. Charita Kotian, 21, a marathon-runner finished the race in no time and was enjoying the hula hoop. “I loved the fitness carnival. There are so many different things to do. My Sunday morning usually begins with fitness training, but here I can do fitness training and enjoy the exercise too. I came here with my friends, making the event more joyful,” she said.
