Congress leader killed, three injured in an accident in Maharashtra

Maharashtra Congress secretary Sanjay Chaupane was killed in an accident in Aurangabad on Sunday. Party’s former Thane district president Balkrishna Purnekar and former deputy mayor of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Ramakant Mhatre were also injured in the accident and admitted to an Aurangabad hospital. The leaders were on their way back to Thane from Aurangabad after attending an event held to celebrate Indira Gandhi’s 100th birth anniversary year.
The SUV in which the Congress leaders were travelling collided with a private bus on Gangapur Road in Aurangabad. The leaders and driver Baldev Singh were admitted to Sigma Hospital in Aurangabad. Chaupane was declared dead on arrival and Purnekar is said to be in critical condition. Mhatre has sustained minor injuries.
Chaupane, who was very close to former chief minister Ashok Chavan and many senior leaders of the party, was a hard core party worker. Chavan, Congress MLA Abdul Sattar, Kalyan Kale visited the hospital after the accident.
The birth centenary celebration was attended by senior Congress leaders Gulam Nabi Azad, Mohan Prakash and other state leaders.
