Creative producer Barun Kashyap, arrested on Tuesday on charges of lodging a false complaint in the cowhide bag case, will stay in police custody till October 8.
The Mumbai resident had in August lodged a police complaint about being bullied by an auto rickshaw driver who accused him of using a bag made of cowhide. Kashyap had posted about the alleged incident on his Facebook account soon after it took place. In a non-cognisable complaint filed with the Amboli police, Kashyap had said the driver stopped the auto rickshaw midway and got two other men who threatened him for using the bag. When the post went viral, senior police officers started probing the case. But the police probe, sources said, found no substance in Kashyap’s claims.
“We want to find out if there is a mastermind behind this whole incident. We want to know if someone gave this idea to Kashyap. We also want to probe what the intention behind the false complaint was,” said an official from the Amboli police station, privy to the investigation.
Kashyap’s arrest on Tuesday led to Aam Aadmi Party member and activist Preeti Sharma Menon alleging the the charges against him were trumped up. She accused controversial ‘encounter specialist’ and assistant police inspector Daya Nayak of having a hand in the arrest.
In response, Deven Bharti , the joint commissioner of police (law and order) said on Twitter that the probe into the case is being “supervised by a DCP. He will ensure fair investigation”.
While Nayak did not respond to HT’s calls and messages, assistant commissioner of police, Arun Chavan, on Tuesday said , “He [Kashyap] is the accused, and he can make any kind of allegations (against Daya Nayak).” .
