A ‘drunk’ tutor allegedly kicked and punched a Class 9 tribal student unconscious for creating a din after a power cut in a government hostel at Dahanu near Mumbai on Thursday night. Nilesh Mathera, 15, was admitted to a hospital in Kasa. When he regained conscious, he told his parents that the 45-year-old tutor, Namdeo Munde who has been given additional charge of hostel superintendent, was drunk.

The parents have demanded action against Munde. They along with other parents have threatened they would not allow of their children to stay in the hostel and also lock it if the authorities fail to take action. The hostel at Nanivali in Vangaon has 540 tribal students from Class 1 to Class 10.

Late on Thursday night, students created a din after the power cut, enraging Munde, said the parents. “The tutor picked on our son. He kicked and punched him. Nilesh fell on the ground in an unconscious state. The other staff of the hostel took him to the hospital,” said the parents.

The parents also alleged that when they confronted Munde, he falunted his political contacts. “He dared us to file a complaint against him,” said Nilesh’s father.

Meanwhile, Aanchal Goel, project officer of Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP), Dahanu, said, “We are investigating the matter and we will take action against the tutor. We are also probing whether he was drunk and his political connection.”
