The two men who were arrested in connection with a Bhiwandi corporator’s murder have confessed to the crime. They said that they planned to kill Manoj Mhatre on Tuesday after his aide had a tiff with one of the accused’s relatives.
The arrested accused were identified as Mahesh Pandit Mhatre, 24, and Mayur Prakash Mhatre, 18. They are relatives of Prashant Mhatre who is the main accused in the murder case. Prakash is also a cousin of the deceased.
The accused were nabbed from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) on Saturday where they had come to borrow money from a friend as they were bankrupt. The accused had been hiding within the outskirts of Bhiwandi and keeping a tab on police activity.
On Tuesday morning, Prashant had a heated argument with Mulayam Yadav a close companion of the corporator during which Prashant threatened Yadav of dire consequences. Yadav then informed corporator Mhatre and they sought to register a complaint. When Prashant came to know about it, he planned to kill his cousin.
An officer from Narpoli police station said, “On Tuesday evening, when the corporator was returning after lodging a complaint, he was attacked by about four people who fired three rounds at him.”
Deputy commissioner of police from zone -2, Manoj Patil said, “Mhatre was declared dead at hospital and after which the accused went absconding. But we managed to trace them and have seized some sharp weapons and firearms from them. We are trying to find the other accused now.”
The arrested accused were produced in court and remanded in police custody till February 28.
