Two unidentified men stole gold jewellery worth Rs8 lakh from a Charkop flat on the pretext of asking for a glass of water from a 35-year-old woman, who was home alone, on Saturday evening.
The accused, while returning the glass after drinking water, sprayed something at the woman that made her fall unconscious. The accused, then, made away with the valuables.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 11) Vikram Deshmane said, “Before the victim could realise anything they used the spray on her face and she fell unconscious.”
Several police teams have been formed to nab the culprits. Also, the cops are going through crimes committed earlier with similar modus operandi, Deshmane added.
The incident occurred at 7.30 pm on Saturday when two persons knocked at the door of the ground floor residence of Hetal Jethwa in Bhagyakalpa Society in Charkop, Kandivli (West). Jethwa was alone at home as her two children were out playing, her husband was at work and mother in-law had gone shopping. “She was watching TV when the accused rang the doorbell and asked for a glass of water. After drinking the water she gave them and while handing over glass to her, they sprayed something and she fell unconscious,” said a police officer.
The accused, then entered the place and fled with gold jewellery worth Rs8 lakh. It was only after the mother-in-law came home, that Jethwa was taken to the hospital and the cops were informed about the incident.
“We visited the house, recorded Jethwa’s statement and registered a case against unknown persons. Initially Jethwa was in shock but then she recovered. We are trying to get more details about the accused if someone has seen them in the locality,” added Deshmane.
