Although Eid will be celebrated on Thursday, parents were confused on Wednesday whether to send their children to schools.Oddly, the state school education department has announced a Wednesday holiday for schools in Maharashtra.
Some schools such as Rizvi Springfield in Bandra have changed the holiday to Thursday. “ Since there was no declaration till evening, we sent a note to parents telling them that we will work on Wednesday and the Eid holiday will be moved to Thursday,” said Rajni Patil principal of the school.
But many other schools decided to stick to the Wednesday holiday as it was tough to announce changes to parents at the last minute. “We are observing the holiday on Wednesday, but Muslim students will be allowed to miss school on Thursday if they want to,” said a teacher from Hansraj Morarji Public School, Andheri.
Similarly at RN Podar School, Santacruz, Muslim students will get a two-day holiday. “We have a holiday on Wednesday, but it will be a two-day holiday to celebrate the festival,” said principal Avnita Bir.
“We will go ahead with a holiday on Wednesday as we had declared that in accordance with the state’s directions. Now that Eid is on Thursday, we will not mind students taking an extra holiday,” said father Francis Swamy, joint secretary, Archdiocesan Board of Education (ABE) which governs over 150 schools in the city.
