In an attempt to spread positive reactions about demonetisation, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ office has roped in celebrities from various fields by putting up their positive views on the social media. The drive has been joined by many from anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare to actors Manoj Bajpayee, Mandira Bedi to computer scientist Vijay Bhatkar and few more.
After the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership in the state sensed trouble in the offing ahead of the civic polls to be held in next four months across the state in the backdrop of the demonetisation, the chief minister’s office (CMO) started the initiative using the social media. The CMO reportedly contacted some well-know celebrities, and requested them to shoot a video clip around 2-3 minutes long on their positive opinion of demonetisation. The video clips were then uploaded on the twitter handles of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, CMO and other social media pages.
Some of the messages, which are in support of the government’s decision on demonetisation, are tagged on the twitter handle or the facebook account of the celebrities. CMO also spent no time retweeting the views by industrialist Ratan Tata who spoke in favour of the move.
Popular Marathi actor Makarand Anaspure, industrialist Jairaj Salgaonkar, Bhatkar were one of the few who were asked to record the clip. According to sources, the CMO is in the process of obtaining a few more video messages from prominent actors and sportspersons in the state.
The reactions from the celebrities have succeeded in catching eyeballs, resulting in hundreds of retweets and comments on social media. Though most of them have been applauded for their views by the CMO, some have recieved criticism from the public. One of the respondents has stated that politicising the issue by using quotes from the celebrities on the CM’s official twitter handle was unethical.
“We have been posting public opinions on social media. Though some of them have been requested by us, many have been spontaneously forwarded to us. We have also appreciated views against the government, as can be observed in actor Manoj Bajpayee’s clip,” said an official from the CMO on the condition of anonymity. The official said that the celebrities have spoke their mind and were not told what to say.
