A 36-year-old man from Kalamboli and his three-year-old son died after their two-wheeler was hit by a truck from the rear on the Sion-Panvel highway on Saturday.
The man’s 60-year-old father, who was riding the bike, also suffered severe injuries in the accident and his now recuperating at MGM hospital at Kamothe.
According to the police, Ranjeet Lekhatil, his father Laxman and the child, Abhijeet, went to Kharghar to get one pair of spectacles around 11 am. While returning home, they met with the accident.
“As they were crossing the Kopra village area, a truck, which was also moving in the same direction, hit them from the rear. All three of them fell down from the bike. The boy suffered severe injuries on his head and other body parts, and died on the spot,” said one police officer from Kharghar police station.
Ranjeet and Laxman were taken to MGM hospital at Kamothe by passers-by. “However, Ranjeet died there after some time. Laxman is still under observation in the hospital,” he said. The truck driver fled from the spot leaving behind his vehicle. The police are now searching for him. An FIR has been registered against him.
“The reason behind the accident has not been understood so far. We think the truck driver lost his control on the vehicle and ended up hitting the bike from the rear. It does not appear to be a case of drink-driving,” the officer said.
“We sent the bodies to Panvel rural hospital for conducting postmortem and then delivered them to their family. The postmortem reports are yet to come,” he said.
