The Nagpada police have arrested a former member of the legislative assembly (MLA) Ramesh Kadam for abusing and threatening a policeman posted at Byculla jail. A case was registered on Saturday against Kadam after a video of the former Solapur MLA allegedly threatening Manoj Pawar outside the jail surfaced recently.
Kadam was arrested in August 2015 for alleged misappropriation of Rs132 crore from the funds of Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Magasvargiya Vikas Mahamandal, which he headed.
The alleged incident took place at 10.45am on Thursday when Kadam was being taken to JJ hospital by Pawar for a medical checkup.
As they were waiting for the police van outside Byculla jail, Kadam started walking around.
“The officer asked him to wait at one side, which angered Kadam and he started to abuse the officer,” said an officer from Nagpada police station.
Pawar recorded the whole incident with the help of a constable, after the MLA threatened to get him arrested under a false case.
In the video, a copy of which is with HT, Kadam is seen asking the constables stationed outside Byculla jail to call the policeman’s senior and tell them that he was asking Rs25,000 bribe.
Sources said Kadam then refused to go to a hospital after he was taken back to his cell.
At 12.45pm, Kadam agreed to go to the hospital and was brought back by 1.30pm after the doctor said there was no need for an operation for his ailment, said police sources.
In the fresh case, Kadam was booked under sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 189 (threat of injury to public servant), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (2) (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
Senior police inspector Baswant from Nagpada police confirmed the arrest and said, “We are investigating the case very thoroughly.”
