The gold was part of jewellery extorted from a man by Iqbal, Sayyed and Mumtaz over the past couple of years.

They were arrested on September 18 for allegedly extorting Rs 30 crore and four flats from a Thane builder. After this, two more cases were registered against them, including Dawood and Anees Ibrahim.

The police said that they had recovered 23 tolas of gold from Iqbal, 52. Pradeep Sharma, senior police inspector of the anti-extortion cell, said, “Sayyed and Shaikh used to visit the bar thrice every week and splurge gold and cash on the two women. We believe Iqbal extorted around 40 tolas of gold from the jeweller.” Meanwhile, police custody of Iqbal, Sayyed and Shaikh was extended till October 14.

Sharma said that the police were questioning other suspects, including jewellers, builders and officials.

“We have got call data records of phone numbers which were used by Iqbal and his aides,” said Sharma.
