The Vikhroli court on Monday sent Shiv Sena leader Sunil Shitap and contractor Anil Mandal, arrested in connection with the Ghatkopar building collapse, to judicial custody for 12 days.

Shitap was arrested on July 25, the day the building collapsed, while Mandal was arrested on July 29. Both of them were in police custody till Monday.

The public prosecutor sought police custody on grounds that the architect Ranjeet Agale is yet to be arrested and further investigations need to be done. Police said Shitap and Mandal were renovating three flats on the ground floor and they may have tampered with the pillars and beams, which could have led to the collapse.

According to police, Shitap had created a Whatsapp group named Sitap hospital for Mandal, Agale and others involved in the construction work. “The police got information on the renovation plan after going through the conversations between the accused,” said a source.

Investigations revealed Agale ordered around 15 iron pillars a fortnight before the collapse.

The police, meanwhile, have received the necessary documents from the civic body and the Registrar of Co-operative Societies. “The documents available with the society were lost in the debris. We are now accessing the documents from the agencies concerned to understand the structure of the building,” said a police officer.
