Eman Ahmed, believed to be the world’s heaviest woman, successfully underwent a weight-loss surgery at Saifee Hospital. Ahmed, now 120kg lighter, will soon return to her hometown Alexandria, Egypt, with financial help provided by the online crowdfunding campaign started by her family and Saifee Hospital Trust, where she received treatment.
Doctors from Saifee Hospital confirmed Ahmed underwent a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, a surgical weight-loss procedure that reduces the size of the stomach to 15% of its original size. Doctors have removed a large portion of the stomach, including fat and limited her food consumption ability.
“She had an uneventful surgery and anesthesia course. Once her condition stabilises, we will send her back home. Her progress will be tracked to confirm if she undergoes continued weight loss,” said officials from Saifee Hospital. Doctors have said Eman will hopefully lose another 100kg in the course of the next 6-8 months gradually.
Every organisation involved in her treatment is working on a pro-bono basis to ensure her family, which is not financially stable, does not face the burden of extensive medical costs. The hospital and doctors are treating Eman free of cost, but there are other expenses involved.
