In Thane: Truck driver runs over woman while talking over cellphone

A 27-year-old truck driver from Nallasopara was arrested on Wednesday after he knocked down a woman while driving. The driver was allegedly talking over his cellphone when the incident occurred on Wednesday at 10 pm on Shilphata-Panvel- Mumbra Road. The deceased, who is yet to be identified, appears to be in her mid 30s.

The truck driver was later identified as Jagan Narayan Rampat Yadav(27). He was nabbed by the passers-by and handed over to the police. Yadav was arrested and produced in court, which remanded him in police custody. Investigation revealed that Yadav was on his way to Thane and knocked down the woman while she was crossing the road, as he was busy talking over the phone.

An officer from Shildaighar police station said, “After the woman was hit by the truck, she was rushed to the nearby civil hospital. However, she was declared brought dead.”

During interrogation, Yadav said he got a call from one of his family members and since a few issues had to be settled so he decided talk while driving. He was arrested and booked under sections 304 A(causing death by negligence), 279(rash driving or riding on a public way) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 134 and 250 (for talking on phone while driving) Motor Vehicles Act .
