A 25-year-old man, who allegedly tried to kidnap a three-year-old boy on Sunday, amid a crowded procession at Ghatkopar (West), was caught by local residents.
The accused, Nathuram Yadav, was intoxicated when the incident occurred around 9pm near Nityanand Hotel.
According to the police, the child, along with his parents and sister, was walking in a religious procession. Due to the crowd, he fell behind when the accused picked him up. However, local residents spotted it and raised an alarm.
“The man took the boy and sat in an auto rickshaw,” said the boy’s uncle. “The other locals and I tried to pull the boy away from him but he held him tight,” he said.
The boy was finally rescued and the accused was beaten up by the locals and taken to the Ghatkopar police station. Yadav works as a porter, said the police.
Yadav claimed he was highly intoxicated during the act and had no intentions to kidnap the child.
