A 27-year-old kidney patient slit her wrist and bled to death in her Virar flat on Sunday after she was allegedly mentally harassed by her in-laws for her sickness and dowry. The Virar police arrested her husband on Tuesday while the victim’s in laws are absconding. The cops said the post mortem report is awaited and a suicide note has been recovered in which the victim has named her tormentors.
The victim, Ashwini Kadam, 26, got married to Sandip Kadam, an MBA graduate, around 18 months ago and resided in Harish Chandra Tower in Virar (East) with her in-laws.
Ashwini’s parents, who filed a complaint with the cops, said they had given Rs10 lakh as dowry and also bore the wedding expenses but the demands kept on increasing. The problems magnified a year ago when Ashwini developed a renal problem and required a kidney transplant. Her mother was even ready to donate one of her kidneys to her daughter and also bear the transplantation and other medical costs in the reputed KEM hospital. But her in-laws and Sandeep kept on demanding Rs5 lakh as dowry, said Mandakini, her mother in the complaint.
Sandeep has been held under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC and the cops are looking for his parents. A virar police official said they have sent the suicide note to a handwriting expert to check that the victim had written it.
