Mumbai: A closed circuit television (CCTV) footage finally led the police to the two men who they claim killed 26-year-old model Kritika Chaudhary. But the investigation, which lasted almost a month since the murder came to light on June 12, saw officers make several teams that went to different states and scanned call records of hundreds.
The extensive questionings led the police to believe that the actress abused drugs, said sources.
When nothing gave them a lead, the cops decided that they will look at Kritika’s call records from the past one year. This is when they stumbled upon suspects Shakeel Naseem Khan, 33, a resident of Nalasopara and Badshah Basudas Makmalal, 40, a resident of Govandi. Shakeel’s identity matched with the person who had entered the building on June 8.
Sources said that four teams were made as soon as the murder came to light. One was asked to collect all the CCTV footage. The second team gathered and analysed call data records. Another team was told to verify Kritika’s personal antecedents from Haridwar, while the last one got details of everyone questioned, including the former watchmen of the building.
When the police came to know that Kritika could have been married before, they formed another team to pick up her ex-husband from Ahmedabad who was arrested in a case of cheating.
The questioning of people around or associated with Kritika led police officials to believe that the model had a history of drug abuse.
The investigation then panned to find out the drug peddlers who were directly in touch with Kritika. The team tasked to analyse call data records could not find any person, who they suspected or came across as suspects in CCTV footages. The team had checked Kritika’s call data records since January.
When they came to know that Kritika abused drugs, the teams questioned over 50 to 60 drug peddlers in Mumbai, and 260 others who were either her clients or friends from Hyderabad, Surat, Kolkata, Delhi, Lucknow and Bangalore. With this, they looked at her phone records from before the incident and zeroed in on Shakeel and Badshah.
Shakeel dealt in mephedrone, commonly called meow meow, and had called Kritika on July 16. He last called her on July 31.
