A 20-year-youth working as a labourer was killed after he fell from the 26th floor of an under-construction tower at Goregaon (West) on Tuesday morning. A probe is on to find out whose negligence led to his death.
According to the Goregaon police, the incident occurred around 9am in Sunteck city, which is under construction, located near Mhada colony in Goregaon (West).
Noor Islam along with other labourers was working on the 26th floor. He had strapped on a safety belt and was installing a grill. Others were working at some distance from him. Authorities said he lost his balance and fell into a drain. He was not wearing a helmet.
Noor came to the city from his village in Assam. He had been working here for three months and had been staying with his friends.
A case of accidental death has been registered. It is not clear how he fell despite wearing a safety belt, said an official at the spot, adding a probe is on to ascertain how he fell and who is responsible.
The police have summoned the site supervisor and the contractor. They are questioning other labourers at the spot to find out the standards of safety measures maintained at the site and whether the inexperienced youth should have been given such a dangerous assignment.
