A massive traffic snarl on Thane’s Ghodbunder Road has left people stranded in their vehicles for up to 10 hours now after a gas tanker overturned around 1 pm on Monday blocking one of the main entry points into Mumbai. And the traffic jam is unlikely to ease anytime soon.

At 9.30 pm, trafficand fire brigade officials said it would take at least half an hour more to get traffic moving. Removing the overturned truck would take several hours more. For hours, the fire brigade battled to ensure there was no gas leak from the Bharat Gas tanker headed towards Vasai that overturned on the busy road.

A tweet from Thane police around 7pm:

Vehicles going towards Vasai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Borivali and Mumbai are stuck on the roads and are expected to be stranded till late in the night. Police have been diverting traffic well before the accident spot, which was a bit of a disaster zone with officials worried about gas leaking while hundreds of people were trapped in their vehicles. People with young children and aged relatives struggled to cope.

Commuter Kishore Parmar, who left Dombivli in a private travel bus to go towards Rajasthan, was stuck at Ghodbunder since 1pm.

Parmar said, “I had opened a new shop in Rajasthan and was on my way for the opening of the shop scheduled tomorrow. I am stuck at Ghodbunder for more than four hours as the traffic isn’t moving at all. There is also no option for the bus to turn backwards and take another route. I am bound to miss the opening.”

The Thane police put out a tweet on the incident:

“The tanker was overloaded with gas owing to which the driver could not control it while taking a turn. Both the cleaner and driver are absconding. A resident informed the police control room about the accident after which we reached the spot,” said a police officer.

Fire brigade vans of the Thane Municipal Corporation and Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation are at the spot.

“They have started spreading foam to avoid gas leak. As a safety measures, vehicles are stopped at a distance of 100 to 200 feet from the accident spot. This will lead to major traffic jams on the road,” said the officer.
