A resident of a posh housing society at Vartak Nagar in Thane ran over a stray pup on Thursday.

The CCTV camera footage shows the car run over the three-month-old pup but the driver does not stop to check on it.

The pup bled for hours and then died.

The incident took place at Unnathi Gardens and another resident lodged a complaint against the car driver with the Vartak Nagar police station.

Deputy commissioner of police (zone 5) Sunil Lokhande said, “The man who was driving the car has been identified as Atul Gangurde, a resident of the same society. We have lodged a case but have not arrested anyone. We have got the CCTV footage of the spot.”

The driver of the car was booked under section 429 of the Motor Vehicles Act 184 and relevant sections of Mumbai Police Act.

The complainant, Praveen Yabaji, 29, marketing engineer with an MNC, feeds the stay dogs every day and has been slapped a fine by the housing society.

On Thursday, when he went to feed the stay dogs, he found the pup lying dead.

“Initially, I thought he had been poisoned. I checked the CCTV footage and got the number plate of the car which ran over the pup. After I got the car number, we searched the owner of the car on RTO app. We found that the car owner lives in our housing society,” said Yabaji.

Yabaji and some residents buried the dog.

“Every month, the housing society tells me to pay Rs500 for feeding strays. The amount has reached Rs47,000 with interest now,” Yabaji said.
