The Charkop police on Friday arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl in Kandivli (West), after it was revealed that the girl was 27 weeks pregnant.
The girl’s parents have approached the Supreme Court to abort the foetus.
The man is a business partner of the girl’s father and they sell idlis. He often used to visit the girl’s house, said the police.
“The man was arrested from his residence,” said P Dhavare, senior inspector at Charkop police station.
The police registered a rape case under sections of the Indian Penal Code and under sections 6 and 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act on Wednesday. The incident came to light on Wednesday after the girl was admitted to the hospital and it was found that she was 27 weeks pregnant.
The hospital authorities then alerted the police and a case was registered based on the complaint of her mother. The girl later revealed to the police that the man had sexually assaulted her on more than one occasion.
He was produced before a metropolitan court that remanded him in police custody till August 16.
The police will question the accused to ascertain the exact sequence of events and to determine when he first targeted the girl.
He would also undergo a medical test. The police are probing if the man knew about the girl’s pregnancy. However, during his preliminary inquiry, he has denied having any knowledge about the same.
