Jignesh Mevani, the face of Dalit protests in Gujarat, on Thursday, attacked the Narendra Modi government and demanded land for Dalit housing, failing which he threatened a ‘Rail Roko’ agitation all over the country. He was speaking at meeting in Dadar.
“Our PM has the time to tweet about a dead dog but has nothing to say on the Una episode. If you don’t allot five-acre land to us, which is our right, we will start our agitation from Una itself,” Mevani said.
Mevani said the Dalit agitation will spread across the whole country from Gujarat. “Dalits have no space to even breathe. I have noticed it everywhere. We decided to take a step further to a national level and not restrict ourselves to Gujarat,” he added.
Mevani also targeted business houses. He said, “If they can get land wherever and whenever they want, then we should at least get what is ours.”
He also chanted his mantra, ‘Gaay ni puchdi tame rakho, amne amaari jameen aapo’ (Keep the cow’s tail to yourselves, just give us our land).
“We are not cow slaughterers by birth. And if you really think of the cow as a mother figure, why do you leave it to die on the roads? Why do we have to perform the last rites?” he asked.
Jignesh Mevani, 35, has been the face of protests by Dalits following the assault of the community in Una in July.
