Mumbai boy who beat friend to death with cricket bat was angered by his teasing

The boy was hit on the heat with a cricket. He collapsed and was taken to a nearby hospital, but succumbed to internal injuries

A 16-year-old boy who beat his friend to death with a cricket bat in a playground at Dharavi on Saturday was provoked by the victim’s teasing, said police.

The boy and his 15-year-old friend,Amir Ansari, had been playing with three other boys at Gandhi Ground, 90 Feet Road. “Amir and his friend were initially teasing each other. This soon escalated into fight, after which the 16-year-old grabbed a wooden bat and hit Ansari on the head around 4 pm. One of Ansari’s friends tried to help him, but he had collapsed on the ground. He suffered internal head injuries,” said a police officer privy to the investigation.

Ansari was taken to nearby hospital, where he was declared dead. His friend was booked for murder and was remanded in a children’s home in Dongri. Police are trying to ascertain the exact sequence of events.

There was no past enmity between the boys. All of them live in the same neighbourhood, said police. “The incident occurred in the heat of the moment. The attack doesn’t seem to be planned ,” said Rajiv Jain, deputy commissioner of police, zone 5.
