The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to spend around Rs10 crore to get theme-based lighting on the lines of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus for its headquarters. The proposal will be tabled before the standing committee on Wednesday.
CST is lit up in different colours such as pink for breast cancer awareness in October, tricolour on Independence Day and Republic Day, among others.
The contract to light up the BMC headquarters is to be awarded to M/s Watchdog Security, who will have to start the project within three months, the proposal said.
The civic officials also plan to light up Sir Pherozeshah Mehta statue in front of the BMC building.
Abha Lambah, conservation architect, who was also a consultant for the project, said, “We have suggested use of LED lights to reduce energy consumption. This project is for exterior illumination of the structure from all three sides. The current lights can be used for any special event inside.”
Installing multi-colour lights at BMC was a part of commissioner Ajoy Mehta’s budget speech, after the concept was received well at CST.
In the past few months, the BMC has initiated several lighting projects in the city. The BMC is planning to install decorative lighting along the Juhu beach. The civic body has also taken up beautification of Gorai, Dadar and Mahim beaches at a cost of Rs22 crore.
