A 26-year-old man accidently ran over his two-year-old daughter while he was reversing a tempo in Bhiwandi on Sunday.

Sanjaykumar Gupta, a resident of Hanuman Nagar in Tadali, has been booked and will soon be arrested. He transports materials and luggage in his tempo.

On Sunday, Gupta came home for some time and he had to leave again for work. “As Gupta was leaving, his daughter Pooja followed him and started asking for chocolates. He took her in his tempo to the market, bought chocolates and dropped her home,” said an officer from Bhiwandi city police station.

After she got down from the tempo, he told his family members to take her inside and that he would be back in an hour.

Dinesh Katke, senior police inspector, said, “He started the tempo and started reversing. Because of the engine sound, he didn’t realise that his daughter had come out of the house crying and was running towards the vehicle.”

While he was reversing, the vehicle hit his daughter.

“Some children, who were playing outside, started shouting and alerted Gupta and the family members,” said Katke.

Pooja was taken to hospital but was declared brought dead.

“The family is in a shock. Gupta is the complainant and the accused in the case. We will arrest him after the girl’s final rites,” added Katke.

Gupta was booked under sections 304a, 279, 337 and 338 of the Indian Penal Code.
