A 35-year-old man was recently arrested for allegedly sexually harassing his 13-year-old daughter for more than a month at Dharavi in central Mumbai.
According to the Dharavi police, the girl was so scared that she did not inform her mother. The incident came to light after an NGO worker saw her crying outside her house. The NGO worker took her to Dharavi police station.
Addicted to liquor, the accused has been unemployed for the past one month. The girl has two more siblings and she is the eldest.
A police official from Dharavi police station said, “In her police statement, the girl said that for the past one month, her father had been sexually harassing her by touching inappropriately. She said her mother was not aware of this.”
An FIR has been registered under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code for sexual harassment and sections 8 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. If convicted, the accused faces a maximum punishment of three years and fine. The accused was arrested immediately after an FIR was registered. He was produced before a sessions court that remanded him in police custody.
