As the time to submit suggestions/objections to the Development Plan (DP) 2034 nears, an assistant professor from the Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute of Architecture and Environmental Studies (KRVIA) has found a unique way to present his observations. Abhijit Ekbote will be sending four sketches to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as his objection to the city’s infrastructure blueprint for the next 20 years.

The BMC released the plan on May 27, 2016 with a 60-day suggestion/objection window for citizens. The last date for submitting suggestions/objections is July 29. After a public outcry, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had asked BMC to revise the entire plan in 2015.

One of Ekbote’s sketches takes a potshot at the BMC’s scrapping of the local area plans (LAPs), which were a part of the earlier DP. The LAPs accounted for a detailed plan of specific areas in the form of housing, developing educations and cultural institutions among others.

Ekbote has also made a sketch on the much-opposed proposal of opening up the No-Development Zones (NDZs) in the city for construction. The DP suggests the opening up of NDZs and salt-pan lands for creating affordable housing in the city, but activists have opposed it because of environmental hazards.

“Cartoons communicate faster and reach a wider audience. I have shared these sketches on Facebook, so people can also understand the implications of this plan,” said Ekbote.

He is planning to submit his objections by July 28, 2016. Ekbote had sent sketches to the BMC as objections on the coastal road project last year.
