Mumbai residents receive dirty water for 3 days, Navi Mumbai civic body clueless

Mumbai city news: The problems started a few days ago after rainwater entered Morbe dam belonging by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation

Some areas in Nerul have been receiving dirty and stinking municipal water for the past three days. The quality of the water is so bad that residents cannot even use it for household chores, let alone drinking.

The problems started when rain water entered the Morbe dam owned by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation a few days ago. The water that flows down the nearby hills and the forest areas carries a lot of dirt. The residents believe that the civic body is not filtering the dam water properly. “The water we have been receiving for the past three days is yellow in colour. If you see it closely, you will find a lot of mud in it and it also stinks,” said Suhani Kumari, 29, a resident of Shirvane.

“We have to boil it for a long time and then filter it to make it drinkable. We are scared to give this water to our child and so we have been purchasing mineral water from stores,” she added.

After collecting water from the dam, the NMMC is supposed to filter it at their plants. The filtered water is then stored in tanks in every area and then supplied to houses.

Rakesh Srivastav, 40, another resident, said, “The dirty water is affecting our daily lives. We are unable to wash our clothes so we are keeping the dirty clothes at one place hoping clean water will be supplied within a few days.”

He added, “Water is the most essential commodity in human lives so NMMC should pay proper attention to it. They must take requisite measures as soon as possible.”

When contacted, NMMC officials said they were unaware of this issue. Ramesh Chavan, additional commissioner of NMMC (services), said, “No one has informed me about it so far. I am forwarding the matter to the concerned department and will ensure that residents get potable water soon.”
