Ten daily wage workers had a narrow escape when the cantilever of the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) crematorium came crashing down at Bhola Nagar on Friday afternoon. The workers had been cementing the slabs and pillars of the crematorium’s elevated pavilion at the time. All ten suffered minor injuries and were given first aid.

An eyewitness said resounding sound was heard seconds before the beam crashed. A funeral had been conducted at the crematorium only a few hours earlier, he added.

The MBMC had awarded the nearly Rs1 crore contract to renovate the crematorium to M E Projects Private Limited. Bhandarkar and Karote Associates are its structural and architectural contractors, said a MBMC official. “We have issued show-cause notices to the two firms and asked them to reply within a week as to why no action should be taken against them”,said the official.

“If the firms are found guilty of negligence and bad quality of construction work,we will blacklist them and no future contracts will be awarded to them,” said the official.

“The firms have ties to a heavyweight political leader in the area. Thus, no civic supervisors were present to keep a watch on the construction. This shows the nexus between the MBMC and the contractor,” said Pradeep Jangam, a social activist, who is to file a RTI query in this regard.

“This is the just the tip of the iceberg with regard to corruption involving the MBMC, contractor and politician.I will see that action is taken,” said Jangam.
