On Iron Man’s birthday, Dahanu BJP unit puts up death anniversary hoardings

As the country celebrated Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birthday, the banners put up by the BJP all over Dahanu had the word “punyatithi” (death anniversary) instead of “jayanti” (birth anniversary).

As the nation celebrated the 141st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on Monday, the Dahanu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party observed the death anniversary of the “Iron Man”.

The party put up hoardings to that effect all over the city.

This did not go well with a Congress corporator of the Dahanu Municipal Council, who protested before the Dahanu police, demanding action against the BJP for insulting one of the key leaders of India’s independence. The Dahanu unit of the BJP admitted the mistake and within minutes, it was rectified. The function was attended by Smriti Irani, Union textile minister, as coincidentally, Dahanu also is her in-laws’ place.

On October 31, the BJP-Dahanu had organised a “Clean up Dahanu” campaign to observe the 141th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Irani had been invited for the same on Monday. However, the banners put up by the party all over the city had Irani’s picture and the word “punyatithi” (death anniversary) instead of “jayanti” (birth anniversary).

Syed Abdul Rashid Sheikh, a Congress corporator of the Dahanu Municipal Council, objected to the mistake and complained to the Dahanu police against the BJP for deliberately insulting Sardar Patel and demanded police action. Although the police received the letter, no action has been taken yet.

Bharat Rajput, a senior BJP leader from Dahanu, admitted their mistake and said some BJP workers may have inadvertently put the wrong word on the hoarding.

“We rectified the mistake and are inquiring into the matter. We had sought permission from the Dahanu police for the Monday event. We apologise for the error on the hoarding, which the Congress has taken up to malign us politically,” he said.
