A 45-year-old woman from Vashi died and another injured after three vehicles collided on Sion-Panvel highway on Monday.

Indira Mhatre and Madhuri Bhoir, 40, were on their way to Pen in a pick-up van to buy vegetables for their shop. As they were crossing the Kamothe chowk, their driver Vilash Kadu, stopped the vehicle for some work behind a stationary truck.

“Another truck, moving in the same direction, hit their van from behind. The van then crashed into the stationary truck, which was parked in front of it,” said a police officer from Kalamboli police station.

Both Mhatre and Bhoir were injured. They were rushed to a nearby hospital but Mhatre died during treatment. Bhoir is still under observation in the hospital.

The police have registered a case under sections 304a, 279, 337, 338 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act against the driver of the second truck. He is yet to be arrested.

“The truck driver applied the brake after seeing the stationary van ahead. But he lost control as it was raining and the road was slippery,” said another police officer.
