The Mumbai crime branch collected voice samples of gangster Kumar Krishna Pillai on Friday to match with a 2009 phone call received by a property developer over extortion.

Pillai, meanwhile, is acting tutored and denying his role in any of the cases registered against him, officials said.

A team of crime branch took Pillai to the forensic sciences laboratory (FSL) to collect his voice samples and the forensic experts will soon submit the report to the investigators.

“FSL analysis will reveal if the voice in the transcript is that of Pillai. If it turns out to be the same, it will act as concrete evidence in the Mcoca case against the gangster,” said a crime branch officer.

Pillai had demanded Rs50 lakh from Shah Developers whose slum rehabilitation project was underway in Vikhroli in 2009. While Pillai’s aides landed at Ramesh Shah’s office near Vikhroli bus depot, one of them asked the developer to speak to Pillai on a phone number and the voice call was recorded.

Pillai also sent his aides at Shah’s office to fire and threaten the developer for not adhering to his order. A case was then registered with the Kanjurmarg police station and Pillai’s aides were identified subsequently.

Pillai, however, has denied his role in other cases, claiming that his men acted themselves and that he had not asked them to issue threats to anybody.

“Matching of Pillai’s voice with the transcript hence becomes critical. Even if we get a conviction in this case, the sentence will be strong enough,” added the officer. Officials said that Pillai claimed that he had reformed and was looking forward for diversifying his business of importing Chinese goods and selling them in Singapore. He visited several countries, including the United States and Africa; however, the purpose of his visits is yet to be ascertained.
