A pillar of a four-storey building, Noor Complex in Naigaon at Gaibi Nagar in Bhiwandi, developed a bend on Wednesday midnight resulting to chaos among residents.

Shanti Nagar police officials, fire brigade and Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNMC) officials rushed to the site and evacuated 81 families residing in the building number 2208,2209 and 2223 from Noor Complex safely without anybody getting injured.

Sunil Zhalke, public relations officer, BNMC, said, “The building is comparatively new and was constructed in 2011. The developer is responsible as he has used substandard construction material.”

“As a safety measure, the corporation engineer would check the building and the society too has been asked to conduct structural audit after which decision would be taken to either repair or demolish the building,” added the PRO.

The building had started developing cracks sometime ago and finally the pillar bent. The corporation is taking stock of the situation. Meanwhile, the families have taken shelter in their relatives’ homes and are waiting for the decision of the corporation.

The corporation will check structural stability today and then accordingly land on a plan of action.
