Thane crime branch’s anti extortion cell got the custody of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s brother Iqbal Kaskar and the three other accused in an extortion case for 10 days under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) on Wednesday. The police got their custody when they told the court that Kaskar’s call records show he called Dawood and gangster Chhota Shakeel more than 100 times in the past two years.

The anti-extortion cell, in its submission to the court, said in the calls, Kaskar spoke to them about business and family members. Besides Kaskar and Shakeel, the other accused in the extortion case are Pankaj Gangar,54, Mumtaz Shaikh,48, Israr Sayyed,57, and two shooters Shammi and Guddu.

A police officer from Thane commissionerate said, “Kaskar made more than 100 VOIP calls through IMO and Skype to Dawood and Shakeel in the past two years. Also, Gangar was also in touch with the two. Hence, we sort the custody to delve in the case deeper.”

The submission was made by ACP NT Kadam in the special MCOCA court. On the other hand, the defence council Sham Keswani told the court that they have repeatedly taken his clients’ custody by saying the same facts again and again. The court, after hearing both the sides, remanded the four to police custody under MCOCA till November 4.

The officer added, “We have recovered around 315 gm of gold extorted by the accused. It was on September 18 that we arrested the four men for extorting a builder of Rs30 lakh and four flats. We have registered a total of three FIRs against the accused and Iqbal Kaskar’s appears in all of them.”
