The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has cancelled its annual Gudi Padwa rally .

On Monday, Raj Thackeray summoned an emergency meeting of his top leaders at his residence and announced the decision.

“Rajsaheb asked us to celebrate the festival with full vigour at the local wards,” said a a senior MNS leader, who did not wish to be identified.

The Gudi Padwa rally was started last year as a counter to Shiv Sena’s Dussera rally, an annual event started by the late Sena founder Bal Thackeray.

The MNS is in disarray due to its lacklustre performance in the civic polls.

It lost power in the Nashik civic body while in Mumbai, its tally came down to seven from 28 in the previous term.

In his 11th foundation day speech this month, Raj Thackeray came down heavily on voters for failing him despite his track record.

He said people fell prey to money power and ignored merit while voting.
