In a week’s time, residents of Thane will be able to enjoy free WiFi in most parts of the city. The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is planning to launch the first phase of the public WiFi system in most parts of the city from July 19. The first phase will cover the highways and main roads in the city, while the second phase will cover the internal parts of the city.
The corporation has undertaken the free WiFi project under the smart city scheme, wherein the entire city will be WiFi enabled, and all residents can enjoy unlimited services.
The project has been undertaken on Public Private Participation (PPP) basis and the corporation won’t have to shell out a single penny. The electric pole network across the city will be used for the purpose.
Civic commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal told Hindustan Times that the first phase will be launched next week, but the entire run would take some more time.
A civic officer, requesting anonymity, said, “The highway and main roads of consist of areas like Naupada, Kopri, Kalwa, Railadevi, Wagale Estate, Eastern Express Highway, Uthalsar and Ghodbunder Road. The WiFi network will be accessible in public areas only and not in a residential or commercial complex. The citizens will simply have to register themselves to browse the internet at a speed of 800kbs. We have already begun the trial runs at most of these spots, and over 2 lakh people have already started using the service. The formal launch will be on July 19.”
The second phase will be launched on October 2, and will cover internal roads and areas in the city. The charges for using the WiFi will be a one time registration fee of Rs100, which will be charged only after the launch of the second phase.
The WiFi network will be a seamless network, just like the cellular network. The city has a big network of electricity poles, which the service providers have used for fitting the WiFi devices. More than 32,500 electricity poles will be used for the entire project.
