Pillai was being cross-examined in connection with a domestic violence case she filed against the sportsman.
Pillai told the court on Monday that she married US national Michel Vaz at the age of 19. The marriage lasted four years, during which she stayed at California, Pillai said. When questioned if she visited the court for her divorce, Pillai said she didn’t remember as it has been very long, but has a divorce decree.
Pillai later got married to actor Sanjay Dutt.
Pillai’s lawyer Mrunalini Deshmukh said the first marriage has no connection with her case against Paes, to which Ponda said proving that she didn’t get a divorce would make the current proceedings unmaintainable.
During the debate, Pillai was asked to step out of court and wait till both the parties prove the relevance of Pillai’s first marriage. On Ponda’s request, Pillai has been asked to get the decree to court on Tuesday.
