A nine-year-old student was mowed down by a school bus while his mother was standing across the road in front of their housing society at Nerul, Navi Mumbai, on Monday. The driver was arrested.

He died on the way to a hospital in Belapur.

According to the police, Samved Tarakara, a Class 2 student of NCRD’s Sterling School in Nerul, alighted from his school bus around 1pm. He was crossing the two-way road to reach his house at Ishwar Bliss Housing Society when he was hit by another school bus coming from the opposite direction.

“He was run over by another bus when he was crossing the road. The accident took place in front of boy’s mother,” said Santosh Jadhav, sub-inspector of Nerul police station.

“The boy suffered severe injuries. He was taken to Apollo Hospital in Belapur but he died on the way,” he said.

Jadhav said the bus that hit the boy did not belong to any particular school. It was arranged by parents to ferry their children who study in different schools. There were around 20 students on board when the accident took place.

“The bus driver, Govind Kumar Roy, 21, fled the spot, fearing public assault. We immediately launched a manhunt and arrested him from Nerul on Monday night,” he said.

The police have booked the driver under sections 279, 304A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 184, 134 (a) (b) of Motor Vehicles Act 1988. He was produced before the judicial court on Tuesday.

The boy’s father works with a private company and mother is a homemaker. The couple has a younger daughter.

The body was sent to a civic-run hospital in Vashi for a post mortem. According to preliminary medical reports, he died of multiple injuries.

Jadhav said, “We have seized the bus that belonged to a private company. We are also investigating if the bus had permission to carry school students.”
