A 70-year-old senior citizen died after she was knocked down by a speeding school bus in Mulund (east) on Thursday morning.

The accident occurred around 7.45 am at Navghar road. The deceased was later identified as Mangala Rane, resident of Tata Colony, who had gone to Sambhaji garden for her morning walk when the accident took place. The garden is a popular location among locals because it has a jogging track. “The bus driver had picked up students from various locations and was heading to the school in Airoli at Navi Mumbai when the accident occurred,” said an officer from Navghar police station.

Investigations revealed that Rane was crossing the road when the bus knocked her down. “She came under the left front wheels. We know that from the injury marks on her stomach. She sustained grievous internal injuries and succumbed on spot,” said the officer.

The accident took place at a spot that has considerable traffic because of its proximity to the Eastern Express Highway (EEH). “The police reached the spot. Rane was declared dead at a nearby private hospital,’ said the officer.

The driver of the bus, identified as one Nadar, was detained at the spot itself. “Another bus was arranged for the students to go to school. We will look into his papers and that of the contractor,” said the officer. Nadar has been booked under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Police said that they are looking for eye-witnesses. “We will conduct a medical examination on Nadar to ascertain if he was inebriated while driving,” said the officer.
