BJP likely to be isolated in assembly over note ban as Sena continues to oppose the move

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to be left alone to defend the Narendra Modi-led Union government’s demonetisation move during the winter session of the state legislature, with the opposition sharpening its knives and ally Shiv Sena also keeping up the heat.

A delegation of Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Shiv Sena will meet RBI Governor Urjit Patel on Monday at 5pm to seek some clarity on how the Central bank plans to tide over the current cash crunch that the country is grappling with post demonetisation. Incidentally, it marks the first day of the winter session of the legislature in Nagpur, where the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress will join forces to take on the government over issues such as demonetisation, the plight of farmers, Maratha reservations and so on.

Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant said, “We want some clarity on till when are people likely to suffer from this kind of a cash crunch. Even today, there are restrictions on withdrawals. A majority of the ATM machines are not functioning. People were not able to access their salaries this month because of the chaotic cash situation. It is absolutely miserable.”

He added, that instead of encouraging people towards a cashless system, the current situation is making people lose faith in banks given the withdrawal limits and the long queues.

The Shiv Sena, which is also a constituent of the National Democratic Alliance government, had earlier planned a full-fledged protest at the RBI headquarters in Fort on Monday. The party, however, hurriedly cancelled the protest march citing requests from the police to avoid large crowds at the spot.

Earlier, the party’s MPs even met Prime Minister Modi to express their criticism of the method of implementation of its demonetisation exercise, and request allowing district central banks, urban cooperatives and credit societies to accept decommissioned Rs500 and Rs1,000 currency notes.

While most parties have slammed the government’s sudden decommissioning old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes, the Shiv Sena has maintained that it is not against demonetisation per se, but the method in which it has been implemented, causing distress to people. The party has, however, been openly targeting the BJP over the government’s demonetisation exercise and even participated in an opposition protest led by Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress.
