Three days after an engineering student crashed his motorcycle into a senior citizen’s two-wheeler, killing him, he was arrested from his house at Shivai Nagar in Thane.
Yashkumar Panje, 24, was let off on bail on Tuesday, a few hours after he was arrested.
Yashkumar is the son of Sharad Panje, police sub-inspector from Thane crime branch. The cop had been deployed at Solapur in connection with the Ephedrine drug haul case when the accident took place.
On Friday, Yashkumar was on his motorcycle going for his exams. He was trying to overtake a two-wheeler, being ridden by a senior citizen, but rammed into it near Vasant Vihar in Thane. Yashkumar fled after the accident instead of helping the injured man, said the police.
Shankar Pawar, 68, who worked as a security guard at a housing society, succumbed to his injuries on Monday night.
The police said that Yashkumar did not tell anyone about the accident and went to his relatives’ house. Yashkumar told his father about the accident on Sunday, said the police.
A police inspector from Chithalsar Manpada said, “After the accident, Yashkumar fled away from the spot. On Tuesday, he surrendered himself at the police station. He was produced in court and was granted bail. After the accident, Yash had been staying at his relatives’ house.”
