Actor Shabana Azmi was on Sunday the only Bollywood star to openly oppose the deal chief minister Devendra Fadnavis brokered between Raj Thackeray and Karan Johar to allow the film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (ADHM) to release on schedule.
On Saturday, after a meeting with the CM, film producers agreed to pay Rs5 crore as “penance” for casting Pakistani actors to an Army welfare fund.
“ADHM has been passed by the CBFC. Home minister Rajnath Singh promises safe passage for the film’s release. The matter should be over,” she said.
“The Maharastra CM’s role was clear. He had to ensure law and order is enforced. Instead, he brokers a deal between producers and Raj Thackeray, who places a price of Rs5 crore for display of patriotism. What a shameful state of affairs and such a blatant expression of double speak for which the Sangh Parivar is notorious. The BJP should demand an explanation from the CM for disrespecting the home minister’s word,” Azmi said.
The actor also took to the micro-blogging site Twitter to voice her opinion.

MNS will decide whether Im patriotic or not?I bow to d Indian Constitution Raj Thackeray does not.Whos patriotism needs questioning?— Azmi Shabana (@AzmiShabana) October 23, 2016
Johar, accompanied by Producers’ Guild President Mukesh Bhatt met Fadnavis with MNS chief Raj Thackeray, whose party has been opposing the release of the film that features Pakistani actor Fawad Khan. It was decided that Bollywood film producers would not engage with Pakistani artistes in the future and Johar will put a special mention in the beginning of the film paying homage to martyrs of the Uri attacks.
Azmi hit out at Thackeray’s MNS saying, “Is Raj Thackeray going to decide whether I’m patriotic or not? I abide by the Indian constitution. Raj Thackeray does not . Whose patriotism should be up for questioning?”
