A 27-year-old software engineer from Chennai was on Wednesday arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 25-year-old woman in April. They were in a relationship, said the police.
The arrest came after a sessions court and the Bombay high court rejected his anticipatory bail plea. The woman had earlier attempted to kill herself twice as the arrested man, Kartik Iyer, allegedly refused to marry her despite promises.
According to the Oshiwara police, the woman committed suicide in April at her Versova residence and blamed Iyer and his parents in her suicide note.
Based on her suicide note and her family members’ statements, the Oshiwara police booked Iyer and his parents under Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
The woman terminated her pregnancies more than once during her relationship with Iyer, said an officer. They were having an affair for around three years.
The Oshiwara police issued summons to Iyer but he didn’t respond to them. Instead, he and his parents applied for anticipatory bail. Although his parents were granted bail, Iyer’s plea was rejected.
The woman was a designer. She and Iyer used to visit pubs and discos where she got addicted to alcohol, the officer added.
The woman had physical relations with him because he promised to marry her. However, when the victim asked the accused to marry him he kept delaying. She realised that he had cheated her and decided to end her life.
